BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The second week of the season went much better for the Geneva College men's soccer team. After defeating Franciscan on Wednesday evening, the Golden Tornadoes took care of Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon by a 1-0 score in a physical match. Geneva evened its record at 2-2, while Wittenberg fell to 0-4.
Neither team could find a goal in the first 45 minutes. Wittenberg outshot Geneva in the first half, 4-2, but both teams went into the break scoreless as neither team could generate many scoring chances.
Things picked up early in the second half. Senior
James Mincone (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) broke through for Geneva in the 51
st minute when he headed in a corner off the foot of freshman
Noah Abdel-Nabi (Recklinghausen, Germany/Recklinghausen) to give the Golden Tornadoes a 1-0 lead.
The final 40 minutes proved to be a physical affair, with six yellow cards given out between the two teams. However, freshman goalkeeper
Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connelsville) made the saves when he was called on, and Geneva held on for the 1-0 victory.
"After a disappointing first two matches to open the season, I was really happy with the guys this week," said Head Coach
Gary Dunda. "They bounced back and played two tough teams and found two good wins. We had a lot of guys giving contributions, from seniors down through freshmen. This second week was good for us, and now we're looking ahead to next week."
The final stats reflect the balanced match it proved to be. Wittenberg had the edge in shots 9-7, including 3-1 in shots on goal, but Geneva held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, with Geneva's goal coming off one of those corners. Kemp made three saves for his second straight shutout. The game had a combined 26 fouls between the two teams.
Geneva finishes its season-opening five-game home stretch on Wednesday when it hosts Case Western Reserve at 7:30 p.m.
