From the Archives: GT Football 1995 Season Highlights

The 1995 Geneva College football season was another season to remember for the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva started the season with seven straight wins before the Golden Tornadoes suffered a heartbreaking 14-13 loss at Malone.  Geneva rebounded from that loss the following week when it traveled to Westminster and shut out the Titans, 17-0.  It was the first Geneva regular season victory over Westminster in 38 years.  That win propelled the Golden Tornadoes to the NAIA National Playoffs for the first time in eight seasons, and only the second time in school history.

The Golden Tornadoes traveled back to Malone to take on the Pioneers for a rematch, and this game proved just as tight.  Geneva led for the most of the game, and after Malone took a late lead, Ron Michel returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown with a minute remaining.  Unfortunately, Malone managed to get into position for a last second field goal, and the Pioneers won the game, 24-23.  Despite the loss, the season set the tone for the next several seasons, with Geneva going 43-13 over a five-year stretch from 1995-99.

Geneva was led by a trio of offensive stars.  Quarterback Rich McClellan passed for 2,228 yards and 18 touchdowns.  Running back Willie Murray finished the season with 1,388 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, while Michel starred at receiver and kick returner, finishing with 46 catches for 805 yards and seven touchdowns, while also returning two kickoffs for touchdowns.  All three were recognized as NAIA All-Americans.  Defensively, Marty Casper led the team with 86 tackles.  John Schmitt had a team-high eight sacks, while Demond Moore led the team with six interceptions.
