Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Picks Up Victory to Open Spring Season

GREENSBURG, Pa. – It might not be quite spring yet, but the Geneva College men's tennis team got its spring season underway on Friday night with a win at Pitt-Greensburg, 7-2.  The victory moved Geneva's record to 3-1 overall, which includes the three matches the Golden Tornadoes played in the fall, while Pitt-Greensburg fell to 3-3.

Geneva opened the match impressively by winning all three doubles matches.  Juniors Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) and Alex Beck (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) earned a win in #1 doubles, 8-4.  Junior Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) and freshman Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) picked up a win in #2 doubles, 8-6, while senior Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PA Collegiate Academy) and sophomore Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) cruised in #3 doubles, 8-1.

Pitt-Greensburg was able to earn wins in #1 and #2 singles, but Geneva swept the final four singles matches.  Greenstein won in #3 singles with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win.  Greissinger battled to a third-set tiebreaker victory in #4 singles 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.  Shaver won in #5 singles in two tough sets 7-5, 7-6, while Guillembet won easily in #6 singles 6-1, 6-0.

"It's good to start the semester off with a win," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "These two lineups were very similar to our match against Pitt-Greensburg last spring, which we lost.  Today's win tells us a lot about how much we've improved as a team over the past year."

Geneva will be off for two weeks until Friday, February 28, when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Mount Aloysius for a 5:30 p.m. match.  Geneva opens the home portion of its spring schedule with a match against Westminster on Thursday, March 19, at 6:00 p.m.
