BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the second time in two weeks, freshman Lillie Berryman (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) delivered a late-game winner, this one coming in overtime against Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon, sending the Golden Tornadoes to an important win over the Bearcats, 3-2. Geneva improved to 4-10 overall, 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent dropped to 5-8, 2-4 in the PAC.
This season the PAC expanded the playoffs to six teams, giving the conference two extra teams in the conference tournament. Geneva and Saint Vincent entered this game tied for sixth place in the conference, meaning the winner would have the edge between the two schools for one of those playoffs spots, while the loser would have an uphill battle to make the playoffs. To add to the day, Geneva recognized its lone senior, Lexi Meese (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area), prior to the game.
Things started poorly for Geneva, when in just the third minute a cross deflected off a Geneva defender and into the net, giving the Bearcats the early lead. It didn't take the Golden Tornadoes long to pull level. This time it was a Bearcat defensive error that led to the goal, with a Saint Vincent defender giving a bad touch on a ball, sending it right to freshman Abby Shoaff (Bessemer, Pa./Mohawk), and Shoaff turned and hit a one-time shot into the far corner to even the score in the 10th minute.
Geneva had the better of the play for the remainder of the half, playing good defense, particularly on Saint Vincent forward Tanisha Grewal, who came into the game with a PAC-leading 13 goals on the season. Freshman Jenna Hartman (Beaver Falls, Pa./Homeschool) almost gave Geneva the lead in the 42nd minute when her low shot from inside the box looked headed for the net, but Saint Vincent keeper Kendall Castor was just able to push the shot onto the post, and it bounced wide and kept the Golden Tornadoes off the board. The match went into halftime tied at 1-1, with Geneva holding a 5-3 edge in shots.
Sophomore Katie Bodenmiller gave Geneva the lead in the 66th minute when she ran onto a long ball over the top from junior Lydia Beare (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian), and after receiving the ball, she cut inside and beat the keeper to the far post from 12 yards out.
At that point Saint Vincent really turned up the pressure. Freshman Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) made multiple key saves, but the Bearcats finally found the equalizer in the 76th minute. A Saint Vincent cross came up and hit a Geneva player's hand in the box, and Hannah Irvine stepped up and scored on the penalty kick to even the match at 2-2. That's where things stayed at the end of regulation, with the Bearcats holding a 9-1 advantage in shots in the second half.
Five minutes into the first overtime period Berryman struck again. She ran onto a ball over the top from Beare, and Berryman turned from inside the corner of the box and sent a ball over the keeper and into the far upper corner to give Geneva the dramatic overtime victory, 3-2.
Saint Vincent finished the game with a 12-8 edge in shots, but Geneva held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Geneva also finished with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Farnsworth made three saves in the win.
The win moves Geneva into sole possession of sixth place in the PAC, but there are still three games remaining and the Golden Tornadoes still have work to do in order to qualify for the PAC playoffs, which would be first time in ten years. Up next is a road game at Bethany on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
