BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team got its offense in gear on Saturday night against the Saint Vincent Bearcats, with freshman Darren Main (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) scoring twice in a 5-1 blowout victory. Geneva earned its second straight win to move its record to 5-7-2 overall, 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent dropped to 2-11, 1-5 in the PAC.
Saint Vincent was actually the one that applied the early pressure on Geneva, creating a couple nervous moments in the opening two minutes and earning two corner kicks. The Golden Tornadoes righted the ship, though, and Main almost got Geneva on the board in the fifth minute when his shot from inside the box hit the inside of the far post and bounced across the face of the net without going in. The Golden Tornadoes finally broke through in the 20th minute when Main received a pass from senior Avery Wenger (Greencastle-Antrim, Greencastle) five yards from goal, and Main poked it into the near post to get Geneva on the board.
Four minutes later, Main doubled the lead when he got on the end of a corner kick from junior Noah Abdel-Nabi (Recklinghausen, Germany/Recklinghausen) and headed one into the near post in the 23rd minute. The Golden Tornadoes continued to apply pressure the rest of the half, but they couldn't find a third goal and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half brought more of the same. Freshman Kyle Lapoure (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) collected a rebound that bounced out of the box and scored from the top of the box to make it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later, junior Antonio Fiordilino's (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) header off a pass from sophomore Justin Finnegan (Pleasant Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) made it 4-0.
Saint Vincent spoiled the shutout in the 82nd minute when Andres Mateos Carrion's shot found the back of the net. Senior Reed McCreery (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) finished off the scoring the final minute when he received a pass from Finnegan at the top of the box, cut it back to his left foot, and slotted one inside the left post to close out the scoring, 5-1.
Geneva finished with a 24-9 edge in shots, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) made two saves in the victory.
The Golden Tornadoes head back out onto the road on Tuesday for a game at Bethany, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
