BEAVER FALLS, Pa. --- The Geneva College women's volleyball team earned its fourth conference win of the season with a 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 24-26, 25-10) Homecoming victory over Franciscan on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 4-3 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play and 7-11 overall.
Freshman right-side hitter Calyne Schmidt (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston) led Geneva with 15 kills, while freshman middle Megan Veon (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) and freshman outside hitter Kami Mummau (Mount Joy, Pa./Mount Calvary Christian) contributed with 10 kills each. Mummau led the team with 17.0 points, including six service aces and two block assists. Veon had 13 total points on the afternoon, adding a solo block and four block assists to her kill total. Schmidt picked up an extra point with a solo block. Junior libero Maggie Townsend (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) earned six points on six aces and led the defense with 32 digs.
In the first set, Geneva took a 6-1 lead, capped by two aces by Townsend. Mummau rattled off three consecutive aces to build the Tornadoes lead to 11-3. A couple of Franciscan errors and a kill by sophomore Tess Neville (Lisbon, Ohio/Crestview) moved the lead to 15-5 before the visitors called timeout. Geneva outscored Franciscan 10-6 the rest of the way to take the first set, 25-11.
The second set went back-and-forth with eight tied scores and three lead changes. Geneva took control following the final tie at 19-19. Mummau held serve for the Golden Tornadoes to get the edge 22-20. Kills by Neville, Mummau and sophomore setter Samantha Peachey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) clinched the win, 25-20.
Townsend held serve for Geneva late in the third set to put the team in place to score match point. A kill by Schmidt closed the Franciscan lead to 23-20 to put the ball in Townsend's hands. Mummau scored a kill followed by a Franciscan error and a Townsend ace to even the score at 23. Mummau posted another kill to give Geneva its only lead of the set, 24-23. However, a Baron block and two Franciscan kills gave the visitors the set, 26-24.
Peachey got Geneva out to a quick 3-0 start in the fourth set with two aces sandwiched around a solid set for a Schmidt kill. The Tornadoes ended up with seven aces in the set with two each by Peachey, Townsend, Neville and one by Mummau. Geneva built a 13-6 lead before Franciscan called timeout for a second time in the set. Townsend held serve for the Tornadoes for the final seven points of the match. Schmidt and Mummau sliced back-to-back kills to seal the victory, 25-10.
The Golden Tornadoes return to PAC action on Wednesday, October 6 at Washington & Jefferson. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Washington, Pa.
