WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Despite dominating most of the game against Waynesburg on Wednesday night, the Geneva College men's soccer team was staring at the end of its season when it found itself trailing 2-0 midway through the second half in the regular-season finale. The Golden Tornadoes just needed a draw to qualify for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs, and it appeared Geneva wasn't going to get that. However, sophomore Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlynton) scored twice, including a goal with a minute remaining, to save Geneva's season as the Golden Tornadoes held on in overtime to earn the tie they needed, 2-2. Geneva's record is now 6-8-3, while Waynesburg's season ended with a 3-12-1 record.
Geneva controlled the game from the start, dominating possession and shots. Senior Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton) had two great chances to score in the first half. In the 22nd minute he was played in on goal, but his one-on-one shot with the goalkeeper went just wide past the far post. In the 33rd minute, he beat the Waynesburg goalkeeper to a ball over the top, tapping the ball around the keeper, leaving an empty net, but his shot went over the crossbar and the teams went into the break still scoreless. Geneva held a 16-3 edge in shots at the half.
Disaster struck in the opening minutes of the second half, with Waynesburg scoring twice in the first five minutes in its first real chances of the game, putting the Golden Tornadoes on the brink of the end of their season.
Geneva pushed forward knowing it had to get at least a tie, and Kerr pulled one back in the 64th minute when he got on the end of a cross from freshman Dominic Sambuco (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and scored from five yards out to cut the deficit to one.
The Golden Tornadoes continued to pressure the Waynesburg goal, but it looked like they might come up short when Kerr came to the rescue. He ran onto a beautiful 60-yard long ball over the top from senior Cole Sauer (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West) with just a minute remaining and slotted a shot just inside the far post to bring Geneva level in dramatic fashion and send the game to overtime.
Junior Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) came up with a season-saving save seven minutes into the first overtime period, tipping a ball just over the bar that appeared destined for the back of net. Geneva then finished out the match with the draw it needed to advance to the postseason.
Geneva finished the game with a huge 34-12 advantage in shots, including a 15-6 edge in shots on goal. Kemp finished the game with four saves.
Geneva will be the #6 seed and head to #3-seed Westminster on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match in the quarterfinals of the PAC playoffs. The Titans upset the top-seeded Golden Tornadoes in the semifinals of last season's PAC playoffs, winning a penalty-kick shootout.
