PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College men's basketball team wrapped up its first semester with a game at Carnegie Mellon on Monday evening, and things went poorly from the start as CMU defeated Geneva 101-57. CMU improved to 6-2, while Geneva dropped to 4-4.
The game was close for the first couple of minutes, but with Geneva leading 9-7 after a three-pointer from freshman Trevor Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), CMU scored the next ten points. A few minutes later, CMU extended its lead to double digits, 24-14, and the game never got closer than eight points the rest of the game. CMU took a 40-27 lead at the break.
Any thoughts of a second half comeback evaporated quickly as CMU opened the half on a 29-9 run, taking a 69-36 lead, with the Tartans hurting Geneva on the boards and taking advantage of multiple Golden Tornado turnovers to rack up easy layups in transition. The final ten minutes saw both teams giving extended minutes to their backups, and CMU finished out the 101-57 victory.
Tipton led the offense with 14 points, while junior Ryan Rachic (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added 12 points. Junior Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), who came in averaging 28.0 points per game, battled foul trouble and finished with just nine points.
Geneva shot just 35% from the floor, while CMU shot 57%. The Tartans controlled the paint, scoring 64 points down low compared to 24 for the Golden Tornadoes, while CMU held a 27-2 advantage in transition points.
The Golden Tornadoes will be off for two weeks before heading to Mount Union to participate in a holiday tournament beginning Wednesday, December 29.
