BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It certainly wasn't easy, but the Geneva College women's tennis team pulled out a tight victory in its season-opener against Thiel, 6-3, with multiple matches going to a tiebreaker to decide a winner. The Golden Tornadoes won four of the five tiebreakers, the difference in the match. Geneva improved to 1-0 overall, 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Thiel fell to 0-1, 0-1 in the PAC.
Senior
Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg) and sophomore
Emily Grove (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned a win in #1 doubles, 8-5, and junior
Caleigh Pumphrey (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) and freshman
Ella Miller (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) won a tiebreaker in #3 doubles, 8-7, giving Geneva a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Junior
Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) won a tiebreaker in #2 singles 6-1, 2-6, 10-5. Junior
Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) also won in a tiebreaker, defeating her opponent in #3 singles 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. Orndoff clinched the victory, winning her tiebreaker in #1 singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 10-4 victory. Pumphrey won the last match of the night in #6 singles 6-2, 6-1, accounting for Geneva's final point.
"After 503 days, this was quite the re-entry into match play," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "This was really exciting tennis tonight, and we fought hard for this win. I'm so proud and so happy for this team, after all the hard work and patience they've put in this past year!"
The Golden Tornadoes return to action next Saturday, March 20, with a 4:00 p.m. home match against Saint Vincent.
