Game Recap: Softball |

Win Streak Reaches Five With Softball Sweep of Chatham

Beaver Falls, PA – A pair of wins for the Geneva College softball team on Saturday pushed its winning streak to five games. The Golden Tornadoes put away Chatham University 16-0 in five innings in the first game before posting a 6-1 win in the night cap. Geneva improved to 9-3 on the season, while the Cougars dropped to 4-6.

Geneva's offense continued to click on all cylinders coming out of the gate on Saturday. A seven-run first inning was a precursor of things to come as Geneva continued to knock the ball around the yard. Madison Smith's (Joshua Tree, CA) rbi single got things going in the first inning. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Peri Ceasri (El Dorado Hills, CA) and Marina Manuppelli (Mars, PA) extended the lead. Madison Forsythe (Trafford, PA) and Sarah Johnson (Highlands Ranch, CO) each doubled later in the inning giving Geneva a 7-0 lead after one.

The Golden Tornadoes did themselves two better in the second inning with nine runs. Back-to-back doubles once again from Ceasri and Manuppelli plated a pair and Madison Schultz (Cranberry Township, PA) rapped an RBI base hit to give Geneva a 10-0 lead. An RBI base on balls from Sidney Young (Plum, PA) and RBI hits from Paige Dill (Boardman, OH) and Rachael Cardenas (Homestead, FL) pushed the lead to 14-0. An error and an RBI ground out from Karly Devaney (Akron, OH) capped off the 16-run explosion.

While the offense was busy dirtying home plate, sophomore pitcher Haley Smith (Joshua Tree, CA) just continued to be dirty in the circle. Smith pitched three perfect innings to claim her fourth win of the year with three strikeouts. Maya Macias (Modesto, CA) made her collegiate debut on Saturday with a pair of shut-out innings allowing a pair of hits and picking up one strikeout.

Geneva banged out 13 hits by ten different players. Johnson, Ceasri and Manuppelli each had two hits with Ceasri, Manuppelli, Schultz, Forsythe, and Cardenas each grabbing a pair of RBI's.

The Golden Tornadoes jumped out quickly once again in game two with four runs with just one hit. Schultz, Forsythe and Manuppelli each picked up RBI's the hard way getting plunked with the bases loaded. They were three of the four hitters that got hit by pitches in the first frame. Danielle Goodman (Glen Burnie, MD) had an RBI single to plate the fourth run of the inning.

Chatham scored its only run of the day in the fourth inning, but Forsythe struck again with a two-run single in the fifth inning to give Geneva some more breathing room at 6-1. Smith once again started in the circle and picked up her second win of the day and fifth of the season. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Nicole West (Glenwood, MD) got her first save of the season by pitching the final 2.2 scoreless innings on three hits and three strikeouts.

Geneva managed just three hits in the night cap with two coming from Goodman while Forsythe had three RBI's in the win.

"We continued to swing the bats extremely well in game one and made things very comfortable early," said Head Coach Van Zanic.  "We faced a very good pitcher in game two but were able to take advantage of some early wildness to put up some runs.  Our pitchers threw extremely well all day and enabled us to keep adding on, so it made for a solid day all around."

The Golden Tornadoes get right back to work on Monday afternoon when they host Carnegie Mellon for a doubleheader slated to begin at 3:30 pm. Geneva will travel to Saint Vincent College for two games on Tuesday.
