Men’s Tennis Earns First Win of the Season

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis overcame an early deficit after the doubles competition completed in its match at Westminster College on Wednesday afternoon, coming back to defeat the Titans, 5-4, earning its first victory of the season.  The Golden Tornadoes improved to 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Westminster dropped to 1-1 in the PAC.

Seniors Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) and Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) were the only Golden Tornadoes doubles squad to pick up a victory during the doubles portion of the match, winning their match in #1 doubles, 8-3.

Heidengren and Greenstein also won their singles matches.  Heidengren won in #1 singles 6-1, 6-0, while Greenstein won in #2 singles 6-3, 6-0.  Junior Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned a win in #5 singles 6-3, 6-3, leaving Geneva needing one more point to secure the win.  The last two matches of the day both came down to tiebreakers, and graduate student Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PA Collegiate Academy) pulled out a victory in #4 singles 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 to secure the victory for the Golden Tornadoes.

"We really had to dig deep for this one," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "I think we'll be better for it later on in the season.  Our guys are working hard, and today it showed."

Geneva will be back in action this Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to W&J to take on the Presidents at 2:00 p.m.
