WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis program accomplished something on Saturday it hadn't done since restarting the program five years ago: the Golden Tornadoes defeated W&J on the court. It was an impressive performance by the men's team, who hadn't been closer than five points in any of the previous four matchups. However, on Saturday afternoon, Geneva delivered a commanding 8-1 victory, improving its record to 2-1. W&J fell to 0-2.
Geneva earned three wins in the doubles portion of the match to give itself a big lead. Seniors
Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) and
Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) won their match in #1 doubles, 8-4. Graduate student
Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PA Collegiate Academy) and sophomore
Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) won in #2 doubles, 8-2. Lastly, junior
Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) and freshman
Jadon Hooke (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) won their match in #3 doubles, 8-4.
In singles action, Heidengren won 6-2, 6-4 in #1 singles. Guillembet cruised in #3 singles 6-1, 6-0, while Greissinger won similarly in #4 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Shaver won in #5 singles 6-1, 6-1. Hooke also prevailed in #6 singles, winning a tiebreaker 6-0, 5-7, 10-7. Greenstein was the only Golden Tornado who didn't prevail in singles, and even his match went all the way to a third-set tiebreak, which he narrowly dropped.
"This team is really starting to play some of their best tennis, at just the right time," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "A win like this against W&J is huge for us."
The road gets even tougher for the Golden Tornadoes, who next host Grove City for a match on Wednesday beginning at 6:00 p.m.
