PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team put a valiant effort on Tuesday afternoon at Chatham, one of the top teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), but between injuries and players unable to travel because of COVID concerns, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't hold up and lost 3-0. Chatham improved to 4-0, tops in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 1-2.
Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Hart (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) helped keep Chatham off the board early with several key saves, as the Cougars applied early and consistent pressure. A key moment occurred midway through the first half when Hart collided with a Chatham striker and went to the bench for the remainder of the half. Combined with two other injuries Geneva suffered, the Golden Tornadoes played a stretch with only 10 players, and it was with just a little over two minutes before halftime that Chatham finally broke through.
The Cougars doubled their lead in the 58
th minute, as Chatham had most of the possession in the second half. The Cougars finished off the scoring in the game with a goal in the 87
th minute, completing the final scoreline of 3-0.
Hart returned for the second half and finished with 17 saves in the net. Sophomore
Katherine Estep (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) played goalie for the final 20 minutes of the first half and made four saves in net. Chatham had a tremendous advantage in shots, 37-2, including a 24-2 edge in shots on goal.
"Chatham obviously had the edge for much of this game, but we were still in the game at halftime, despite our circumstances," said Head Coach
Doug Miller. "But when players get injured and more goals get scored, it takes the wind out of our sails. Losing by three isn't the result we wanted, but this team worked so hard and showed a lot of heart to hang in as long as we did. It will be nice to have a week off before our next game to regroup and try to get healthy."
Geneva is next in action next Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Saint Vincent for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
