WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team entered its matchup with W&J undefeated on the season, having won twice in double overtime. On Tuesday, the Golden Tornadoes unfortunately ended up on the other side of a double overtime thriller, seeing the Presidents score a minute into the second overtime period to defeat Geneva in the battle for first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), 2-1. W&J took over first place in the PAC, moving to 6-0-1, while Geneva dropped to 6-1.
The first 30 minutes of the game proved to be a feeling out period, with neither team generating a lot of scoring chances. W&J broke through first, though, when Geneva got caught napping in the back. The Presidents took a free kick 70 yards from goal, and the Golden Tornado defense failed to cover Thomas Davidson's run, who ran free onto the ball behind the Geneva defense and scored on a shot that went over the head of sophomore goalkeeper
Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) to give W&J the lead, 1-0. That's where the scored stayed going into halftime. The Presidents held a 9-4 advantage in shot in the first half, though the shots on goal were even.
Geneva turned things around in the second half, bringing forth continuous pressure against a W&J team that tried to keep the Golden Tornadoes from finding the equalizer. Geneva finally broke through in the 84
th minute, courtesy of freshman
Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlynton), who earlier in the day had been named the PAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week. Junior
Avery Wenger (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) made a run down the right side of the field and sent a cross through the box, where Kerr was waiting on the back post, and his header into an empty net evened the score at 1-1. The goal was well-deserved after 40 minutes of continuous pressure.
Geneva controlled most of the first overtime period, as the Golden Tornadoes did for most of the second half, but Geneva couldn't find the game-winner despite a couple good chances. That came back to haunt the Golden Tornadoes quickly in the second overtime period. In the first minute of double overtime, against the run of play, W&J's Jayden Da collected a long throw-in in the Geneva box, and his one-time shot from just inside the box beat Kemp to the near post, giving the Presidents the dramatic 2-1 victory.
The final shot total was even at 17-17, but Geneva held an advantage in shots on goal, 9-5. Kemp's two goals allowed equaled the total number of goals he had allowed in the previous 511 minutes he had played so far this season, though he didn't have much of a chance on either shot. Junior
Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton) had a team-high five shots.
Geneva will look to get back into the win column on Saturday with a home match against Waynesburg beginning at 7:30 p.m.
