LATROBE, Pa. – It has been a tough recent stretch for the Geneva College men's tennis team over the past two weeks, and Geneva's string of narrow losses continued at Saint Vincent on Wednesday afternoon with the Golden Tornadoes dropping a 5-4 decision to the Bearcats, Geneva's third straight 5-4 loss. Saint Vincent improved to 4-2, 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva dropped to 2-5 overall, 2-3 in the PAC.
This match was a rematch of Geneva's season-opener in which Saint Vincent won 6-3, but the Golden Tornadoes were missing a key player in that match. Tonight's match also did not count in the PAC standings.
Saint Vincent took an early 2-1 advantage in the doubles portion of the match. Graduate student
Alex Greissinger (Erie, Pa./Northwest PA Collegiate Academy) and sophomore
Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) earned Geneva's point in #2 doubles, winning their match 8-2.
In singles action, senior
Drake Greenstein (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) won in #2 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Guillembet cruised in #3 singles 6-1,6-0, and junior
Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned a win in #5 singles 6-4, 6-1. Unfortunately, Geneva couldn't secure that elusive fifth point resulting in another narrow defeat.
"This was another tough 5-4 loss for us today," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "It's frustrating to keep falling just short, but our guys are still playing tough. Hopefully we'll put it all together just in time for the PAC playoffs."
Geneva wraps up its regular season schedule with a home match against Waynesburg next Wednesday, April 21, at 6:00 p.m. on Blackhawk Courts.
