BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team lost twice to Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon, one by a very close score, 4-3, and one by a big margin, 20-1. Saint Vincent improved to 12-9 overall, 11-6 in the Presidents' Athletics Conference (PAC), while Geneva dropped to 7-14 overall, 5-12 in the PAC.
Junior
Marshall Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) took the mound in game one, and he kept the Bearcats off balance all game. Saint Vincent struck first, though, courtesy a Geneva error to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Geneva's offense got going in the bottom of the fifth. A Saint Vincent error allowed an early Golden Tornado baserunner, and Geneva converted it into two runs. Senior
Tyler Seliga (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) drove home one run with an RBI-single, and sophomore
Gabriel Morales (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) stole home for Geneva's second run.
Geneva went to the bullpen to start the sixth, and the move didn't work out well. Freshman
Joshua Kearns (Akron, Ohio/Woodridge) struggled with his command, walking three and throwing a wild pitch, which eventually led to two runs for the Bearcats, allowing Saint Vincent to take back the lead, 3-2.
Geneva's offense rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning for the tying run, with junior
Alex Fee (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) providing a two-out RBI-single to even the score at 3-3.
However, Saint Vincent's TJ Dailey hit a solo home run off sophomore reliever
Timothy Munz (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) to give the Bearcats the lead back, 4-3, in the top of the seventh. Geneva's offense tried to rally in the bottom of the inning with two outs, as sophomore
Abram King (Washington, Pa./Trinity) walked and went to third on a double from senior
Garrison Wieland (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville), but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't come up with the walk-off hit and fell, 4-3.
Wheeler was strong despite his no decision, pitching five innings and giving up five hits and one unearned run, while striking out four. Munz took the loss in relief. Wieland and sophomore
Alex McKay (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) each had two hits to lead the Geneva attack.
Sophomore
Austin Smith (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) took the mound in game two, and things fell apart quickly. He escaped the first while allowing just one run, but Saint Vincent struck for five runs in the second, the key hit a bases-clearing triple with two-outs. That inning knocked Smith out of the game, but the bullpen didn't fare any better.
Saint Vincent score two runs in the fourth and four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take 16-1 lead, and the Bearcats added to their run total later in the game, winning 20-1 in dominant fashion.
Geneva's four pitchers gave up 20 hits and 15 walks in a rough day of work. The offense managed ten hits, with King leading the offense with three hits and the lone RBI, while Morales and McKay each added two hits.
Geneva heads to Saint Vincent on Monday to finish off the four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
