Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Comes up Short against Waynesburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – This season has proven to be a semester of attrition for the Geneva College women's soccer team, and Saturday proved just another example of that in Geneva's match against Waynesburg.  Despite not having a single healthy sub available, the Golden Tornadoes battled all game against the full-strength Yellow Jackets, but Waynesburg scored early in the second half and prevailed 1-0.  Waynesburg improved to 3-5 overall, 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva dropped to 2-4 overall, 2-4 in the PAC.

Geneva knew its best chance for victory on Saturday afternoon was to pack things in defensively and try to take advantage of a counterattack opportunity to pick up a goal.  That strategy proved fairly successful in the first half, as the Golden Tornadoes absorbed a lot of pressure, but mostly kept the box clean and allowed freshman goalkeeper Julia Hart (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) to clean up any shots that made it through.  Waynesburg dominated the possession in the first half, and held a 10-2 advantage in shots, but Geneva kept the game scoreless going into halftime.

Waynesburg finally broke through ten minutes into the second half, though, when Jessica Silbaugh put one into the upper corner from 15 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets the lead, 1-0.  Geneva tried to find a counterattack opportunity to pull level, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to find a goal.  Despite not allowing any further scoring from Waynesburg, Geneva eventually fell 1-0.

Waynesburg had a big advantage in shots, 21-3, and shots on goal, 10-1.  Hart was strong in goal again, stopping nine shots and giving the Golden Tornadoes a shot all the way to the end.

Geneva enters its last week of the regular season with a busy schedule.  The Golden Tornadoes host Franciscan on Tuesday night, travel to W&J on Thursday night, and then host Westminster for Senior Night on Saturday.
