Women’s Tennis Sees Season End in PAC Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quarterfinals on Tuesday night.  Geneva entered the playoffs as the #5 seed and traveled to #4 W&J for its quarterfinal matchup, and the Golden Tornadoes dropped the match by a score of 6-3.  Geneva finishes its season with a 4-5 record, while W&J moves to 4-2 and advances to the semifinals.

Geneva lost to W&J earlier in the season, 8-1, so the Golden Tornadoes knew they would have their hands full.  Geneva dropped the opening three doubles matches, which put the Golden Tornadoes in an early hole, one that was too much to climb out of.

Junior Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) came through with a good win in #2 singles, though, winning a third-set tiebreaker 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.  Graduate student Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) also picked up a victory, winning in #3 singles 6-3, 7-5.  Geneva's final point came from junior Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) in #4 singles, with Paquet also winning a third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.  Sophomore Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) almost came through with another point, but she lost a third-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 9-11.

"We started off a little slow in doubles today, and that proved to be the difference," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "But I'm so proud of how we kept fighting in singles and almost came away with four wins.  One thing these women have done all season is to give 110% until the last point is played, and they did that once again today."
