W&J Knocks off Women’s Soccer

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team made the trip to W&J on a cold Thursday night, and the Presidents shut out the Golden Tornadoes by a score of 4-0.  W&J improved to 2-2-2, while Geneva dropped to 2-6.

Geneva was able to put forward a little early pressure in the game, with senior April Mann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian Academy) and sophomore Katherine Estep (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) each registering shots on goal in the first eight minutes.  However, W&J began to take over control midway through the half, and the Presidents got on the board in the 22nd minute when Lexey Finney got behind the Geneva defense and beat freshman goalkeeper Julia Hart (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) to the far post.

W&J doubled its lead ten minutes later when Izzy Saloom got in behind the Geneva defense and put one into the upper near corner.  That's where the score stayed heading into the half, with the Presidents holding a 7-4 advantage in shots, although the shots on goal were even at 4-4.

W&J came out with early pressure in the second half, and the Presidents were rewarded with two quick goals just seven minutes into the second half, increasing their lead to 4-0.  Neither team was able to find another goal the final 35 minutes, and W&J wrapped up the shutout victory.

The Presidents dominated play in the second half, outshooting Geneva 14-3 in the period.  For the game W&J held advantages of 21-7 in shots, and 8-5 in shots on goal.

"Our players are pretty stiff, and injuries are continuing to affect our team," said Head Coach Doug Miller.  "Our touches were heavy, and we missed too many passes, so we struggled to maintain possession.  Mentally and physically we are a pretty beat up team, but I'm proud of our team for staying positive and fighting to the final whistle."

Geneva finishes up its season on Saturday with a home match against Westminster beginning at 5:00 p.m.  The match will be Geneva's senior night, with Mann, Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and Autumn Hunkele (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) being recognized before the game.
