BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team completed its season on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over Westminster, with the Golden Tornadoes recognizing its six seniors prior to the game on Senior Night. The victory moved Geneva's record to 8-1 this season and clinched the top spot for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs starting next week. Westminster's record is now 4-4.
Geneva entered the night knowing it had to win in order to finish at the top of the PAC standings. The Golden Tornadoes also took the opportunity to honor six seniors prior to the game.
Nate Burkhart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield),
Luke Herman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim),
Kevin Pasho (Smithville, Ohio/Central Christian),
Chase Baxa (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock),
Zach O'Connor (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and
Mason Mee (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) were all recognized before the match for their contributions to the men's program over the past four years.
Westminster came into the matchup having to close out its season with games on back-to-back days against Geneva and Saint Vincent, with the Saint Vincent match determining who advances to the PAC playoffs as the final seed. So because of that, the Titans chose to rest a number of their starters in preparation for tomorrow's game with the Bearcats.
Geneva dominated the game from the opening kick, as the Golden Tornadoes controlled possession throughout. Geneva had several good chances to score in the first half, but it wasn't until the 39
th minute when freshman
Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlynton) received a cross from Pasho and scored from five yards out to put Geneva on the board going into halftime. The Golden Tornadoes outshot Westminster 14-0 in the first half.
Junior
Ian Gelsinger's (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) header from three yards out off a cross from sophomore
Noah Abdel-Nabi (Recklinghausen, Germany/Recklinghausen) doubled Geneva's lead in the 53
rd minute, and with the way the Golden Tornadoes were dominating the match, it all but sealed the victory, as neither team scored over the final 37 minutes.
Geneva finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) earned his fifth shutout of the season by saving the only shot on goal he faced.
"This was a really good way to finish out the season and clinch the top spot in the conference," said Head Coach
Gary Dunda. "I'm especially happy for our seniors who have contributed so much to this program over the past four years. Now we get ready for the PAC Semifinals starting next week."
Geneva will await the winner of tomorrow's Westminster and Saint Vincent match in the PAC Semifinals, scheduled for Tuesday night. Grove City, the second seed, will host W&J, the third seed, in the other semifinal matchup.
