Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Saint Vincent for Fifth Straight Win

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team put together a very workmanlike effort on Wednesday afternoon at Saint Vincent, scoring two early goals and then sustaining things the rest of the way for a 2-0 victory over the Bearcats.  Geneva improved its record to 5-0, 5-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent dropped to 3-3, 3-2 in the PAC.

Geneva had all the possession early, with several decent chances to get on the scoreboard.  A Golden Tornado goal felt inevitable, and in the 23rd minute freshman Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlyton), who had just come on as a sub, received a beautiful cross in the box from senior Kevin Pasho (Smithville, Ohio/Central Christian), and Kerr scored from four yards out to finally break through.

Three minutes later, Pasho doubled the lead from just inside the Saint Vincent box as he corralled a loose ball in the air and volleyed one inside the far post, extending the Geneva lead to 2-0.  Two minutes later, sophomore Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) made a nice diving save to keep the Bearcats off the board, the only time Saint Vincent threatened in the first half, and the Golden Tornadoes took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Geneva's early dominance evened out in the second half, as Saint Vincent picked up its play and created some opportunities early in the second half, with the Golden Tornadoes searching for a third goal that would likely close out the match.  Geneva could never find that third goal, but the Golden Tornadoes' defense never allowed the Bearcats to break through, and Geneva held on for the 2-0 victory.

The Golden Tornadoes dominated the final stats, holding a 21-7 edge in shots, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Junior Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) had a team-high six shots, including three on goal.  Kemp made two saves to earn his first shutout of the season.

"Conference road wins are always tough to come by, and we are happy to get this one," said Head Coach Gary Dunda.  "Saint Vincent is a much improved team with good players all over the field.  We need to keep improving and prepare for our next match."

Geneva will be back in action this Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at home against Bethany.
