Baseball Season Ends with Two Losses at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team saw its season come to a close on Friday afternoon at Grove City, with the Golden Tornadoes dropping a doubleheader by scores of 20-8 and 8-1.  Grove City clinched the second seed in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Tournament with the two wins, improving to 27-8 overall, 23-5 in the PAC.  Geneva finished its season with an 11-24 overall record, 6-21 in the PAC.

Things couldn't have started much worse for the Golden Tornadoes in game one.  After a scoreless top of the first, Grove City scored 10 times in the bottom of the first off junior starter Marshall Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler).  The first eight Wolverines reached base on four hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batter.  By the time the inning had finished, 15 batters had come up to the plate, with the final damage showing six hits, three walks, two errors and a hit batter, with six of the runs unearned.

Freshman Gerald Vukovcan (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) replaced Wheeler to start the second, and the Grove City attack continued, with all the damage coming with two outs.  After two of the first three batters were retired, the Wolverines took advantage of an error that would have ended the inning without any runs.  However, given an extra out, Grove City responded with four straight doubles, followed by a triple, to increase its lead to 16-0, with all six runs unearned.

Freshman Cameron Tyson (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) finally got Geneva on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI-single.  In the sixth, the Golden Tornadoes scored four times, with senior Tyler Seliga (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and freshman Donald Dungee (Virginia Beach, Fla./Landstown) each coming up with two-run doubles.

Grove City added two more runs in the sixth.  Geneva got RBI-singles in the seventh from freshmen Ryan Bowser (Kittaning, Pa./Armstrong) and David Toruno (Menifee, Cali./Paloma Valley), and a third run came in to score on a Wolverine error.  Grove City finished off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run home run.

Toruno was the highlight of the day, going 5-for-5 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in a run.  Seliga and Dungee each finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Bowser went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

It was Toruno again who sparked the offense in game two, leading off the game with a single, and he came around to score on an RBI-double from Dungee, giving Geneva an early lead.  However, it didn't last long.

Grove City answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off freshman starter Joshua Kearns (Akron, Ohio/Woodridge), as the first three batters singled, doubled and tripled.

The Wolverines kept their offense in gear, scoring once in the second and twice in each of the third and fourth innings.  The only noteworthy thing for Geneva was that Toruno was finally retired in the top of the third, the first time he had made an out on the day after reaching base safely on his first seven plate appearances.  Grove City finished out the win in seven innings, 8-1.

Geneva managed just five hits in the second game, with Dungee and freshman Tim Hermansen (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) each finishing 2-for-3.  Kearns took the loss, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up nine hits and eight runs.

This marks the end of the season for the Golden Tornadoes, with Geneva losing three seniors to graduation in Seliga, Dylan O'Rourke (Hutchinson, Pa./Yough) and Garrison Wieland (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville).
