BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Those four goals the Geneva men's soccer team scored on opening night against La Roche seem like a long time ago for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva failed to score again on Saturday night against the University of Mount Union on the second night of the Nate Ferraco Classic, and for the second time in two nights the Golden Tornadoes gave up a late goal and fell 1-0. Mount Union improved to 3-0-1, while Geneva dropped to 1-2-1.
Mount Union controlled possession for stretches early on, but neither team was able to generate many good chances in the first half. The Purple Raiders did hold a 4-1 edge in shots at the half, but none of those shots were particularly troubling for junior goalkeeper
Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville).
The pace picked up in the second half with tired legs creating more open spaces for players to operate. Geneva was the aggressor for much of the half, with a flurry of shots six minutes into the half failing to find the back of the net. Geneva kept the pressure up, but in the end, it was Mount Union's Gavin Velazquez who got behind the Geneva defense in the 81
st minute and finished one past Kemp for what proved to be the game-winner.
Geneva outshot Mount Union 8-4 in the second half, but it was the Purple Raiders who got the only one that mattered. For the game, Geneva held a 9-8 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had three corner kicks. The Golden Tornadoes have now gone 323 minutes without scoring.
The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action on Wednesday when Geneva hosts Mount Aloysius at 7:00 p.m.
