Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Valiant Effort Ends in Heartbreak for Women’s Soccer

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team hosted undefeated Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday night, with the Bobcats coming into the contest with a 6-0 record, including a goal differential in those six games of 37-2.  Despite the tough opponent, the Golden Tornadoes played the Bobcats very tough, down to the very end when Pitt-Greensburg scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation to pick up the 1-0 victory.  The Bobcats improved to 7-0, while Geneva dropped to 1-5.

Pitt-Greensburg had a little more of the possession early on, but it was Geneva who almost found the net first, with a hard shot off a free kick from freshman Lillie Berryman (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) in the 18th minute getting deflected wide to junior Lydia Beare (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) just eight yards from net, but an off-balance Beare couldn't get much on her follow-up shot, allowing Bobcat goalkeeper Lauren Yoder to make the back-to-back saves.

Pitt-Greensburg continued to keep the pressure up, resulting in several corner kicks, but the interior of Geneva's defense held strong, keeping the Bobcats largely out of dangerous situations and enabling freshman goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) clear views on shots coming from distance.  Neither team could score, with the shot totals even at 4-4 at the half.

Midway through the second half, the Golden Tornadoes started to tire, and Pitt-Greensburg picked up the intensity.  Farnsworth made a great read on a ball over the top of the Geneva defense in the 59th minute, meeting the oncoming Bobcat striker simultaneously to deflect the ball wide.

Geneva did have counter opportunities against the Pitt-Greensburg pressure.  The Golden Tornadoes almost found a winner in the 89th minute when freshman Kiera Cryan's (Swedesboro, N.J./The Christian Academy) shot went just wide off a corner kick.

Disaster struck with seven seconds left.  The Geneva defense was unable to clear the ball, and Pitt-Greensburg's Tiffany Michalek received a pass in the middle of the box with space and deposited the ball into the far corner to give the Bobcats the victory.

Pitt-Greensburg finished the game with a 17-8 edge in shots, but only a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, as Geneva had a few good chances to find a goal.  The Bobcats did hold a big 13-3 edge in corner kicks, but the Golden Tornadoes defended those kicks well.  Farnsworth made five saves.

"It was obviously a very disappointing end, but I'm really proud of the way our team fought all game long," said Head Coach Kelsey Morrison.  "We've made a lot of strides since our first game, and this young team is starting to find their spots and play with confidence.  This was our best performance so far this year, against a strong opponent.  We are frustrated with the ending, but for where we are as a program right now, this was a really encouraging performance, something we can built on as we head into conference play next week."

The women will be back in action this Saturday when Geneva hosts Baldwin Wallace for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
