NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) on Wednesday afternoon with a tough assignment: traveling to Westminster to take on the 6-1-1 Titans. Westminster used three first half goals to take control of the game, and Titans finished the shutout off, 4-0. Westminster improved to 7-1-1, 1-0 in the PAC, while Geneva dropped to 1-7, 0-1 in the PAC.
Both teams had chances early on, with Geneva gaining a couple counter attacks that looked promising that the Golden Tornadoes failed to convert. Westminster kept up its pressure, though, and the Titans were rewarded in the 21st minute when Julia Redilla's shot from inside the box bounced off the left post and went in.
Westminster broke the game open in the final ten minutes of the first half. Redilla scored again in the 37th minute when her free kick from just outside the corner of the box eluded freshman goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) to the near post. Five minutes later, Westminster's Allie Augustine took advantage of a short Geneva goal kick by intercepting the ball and dribbling in on goal, scoring to the far post to give the Titans a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Redilla scored a hat trick in the 59th minute when Farnsworth bobbled a save, which fell right to Redilla's feet, and she poked the ball into the net, finishing off the scoring in the game, 4-0. Geneva could never figure out a way to break down the Westminster defense and finished the game without a goal.
Westminster held a big edge in shots, 27-8, as well as a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. Farnsworth had another busy day, making nine saves, giving her 29 saves in her last three games. Sophomore Katie Bodenmiller (Westfield, N.Y./Westfield Academy and Central) had a team-high three shots.
Geneva will be back in action this Saturday, October 2, when the Golden Tornadoes host Thiel at 11:00 a.m. on Homecoming.
