Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Another Draw for Men’s Soccer at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – It has been a season for ties for the Geneva College men's soccer team, and that trend continued on Saturday at W&J as the Golden Tornadoes got a late goal to pull out a 2-2 draw against the Presidents.  Geneva's record is now 6-3-6, 3-1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), with the draw keeping the Golden Tornadoes just ahead of W&J in the PAC standings, while the Presidents are now 6-5-2, 3-2-2 in the PAC.

Geneva's frustrating trend of conceding the first goal continued on Saturday.  For the fourth straight game, the Golden Tornadoes saw their opponent strike first, this one coming off the foot of President Zach Bowser in the 38th minute, enabling W&J to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Golden Tornadoes pushed forward in the second half, and Geneva finally broke through in the 73rd minute.  The Golden Tornadoes earned a free kick 30 yards from goal, and junior Justin Finnegan (Pleasant Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) sent a long ball, intended to be a cross, through the box that just kept floating towards the goal, and it eventually ended up in the far upper corner of the net, evening the match at 1-1.

However, W&J, responded six minutes later when Parker Byas put the Presidents back ahead with a goal.

Geneva would have one more answer, though.  Less than two minutes later, freshman Blaise Burns (Ambridge, Pa./Quaker Valley) secured a loose ball at the top of the box and slotted a ball through to the feet of junior Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamiaca/Carlynton), and he beat the keeper to the far post with his left foot to pull the Golden Tornadoes level, 2-2, with just under ten minutes remaining.

Neither team could find a game-winning goal in the closing minutes.  The six draws for Geneva are a school record.

The final stats showed a very even match.  W&J held slim margins of 14-13 in shots and 7-6 in shots on goal, while Geneva had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The tie keeps Geneva in third place in the PAC standings with a big home match against Franciscan, the team just ahead of the Golden Tornadoes in the standings, slated for Wednesday on Reeves Field at 7:00 p.m.
