Men’s Soccer Heads into PAC Playoffs with Win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team put together a convincing 3-0 victory at Waynesburg on Wednesday night as the Golden Tornadoes wrapped up their regular season with a victory.  Geneva will head into the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs as the No. 3 seed, which was already locked into place prior to tonight's matchup.  The Golden Tornadoes finished the regular season with a 9-3-6 overall record, 6-1-3 in the PAC.

Geneva controlled the game from the opening kick, and the Golden Tornadoes got on the board just over 12 minutes into the game off another set piece, something the men have been very dangerous on all year.  Freshman Wil Dunda took a free kick and sent the ball through box and to the back post, right into the run of senior Cole Sauer, whose diving header beat the keeper to the far post.

Sophomore Kyle Lapoure just missed doubling the lead in the 19th minute when he collected a corner kick in the box, but his shot from close range banged off the post.  Ten minutes later, though, Lapoure found the net.  Sophomore Caleb Chambers made a run down the left side and sent a ball through the box where Lapoure was open at the far post, and he doubled the lead with a short header just inside the near post.  That's where the scored stayed going into the half as the Geneva defense never allowed the Yellow Jackets any threatening chances.

Chambers added to the lead less than five minutes into the second half when he collected a ball 60 yards from goal and made a run down the left side, eventually chipping the ball over the Yellow Jacket's keeper's head and into the far corner from left side of the box.  Three minutes later junior Carnel Kerr almost got on the board when his laser of a shot from 25 yards away banged off the cross bar.

Chambers' goal proved to be the final score of the match, with the Geneva defense completely shutting down the Waynesburg attack.

Geneva finished with a 16-7 edge in shots, and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Gabriel Kemp earned his second straight shutout by making three saves.

The Golden Tornadoes will host Westminster on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the PAC Quarterfinals.  The two teams tied 1-1 earlier in the season.  This will be the fourth straight season these two teams have met in the PAC playoffs, with the Titans prevailing in the past two postseason matchups.
