WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team's season came to an end on Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss at Waynesburg, wrapping up the year for both teams with neither qualifying for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs. The Golden Tornadoes finished their season with a 4-11-3 overall record, 2-7-1 in the PAC.
Geneva was the better team in the first half, with sophomore Saige Musser causing lots of problem down the left side and creating chances for the Golden Tornadoes. It was Musser who got Geneva on the board when she collected a ball 30 yards from goal and sent a beautiful ball over the top of the Waynesburg keeper and into the net in 36th minute. Geneva went to half with a 10-5 edge in shots and a 1-0 lead.
Waynesburg came out the better team in the second half, though, creating pressure on the Geneva backline. Kate James provided the equalizer in the 59th minute when she collected a cross in the middle of the Geneva box and found herself all alone, and she put the ball into the back of the net to pull the Yellow Jackets level.
The game became more stretched over the final 30 minutes with both teams creating the chances, but it was Waynesburg who found the game-winner with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets put a ball over the top that Demaree Livingston ran onto, and she scored on a shot from just inside the top of the box to give Waynesburg what proved to be the deciding goal.
Waynesburg finished with a 12-4 advantage in shots in the second half and a 17-14 edge overall. The shots on goal were fairly even, with the Yellow Jackets finishing with 12 and Geneva finishing with 11. The Golden Tornadoes held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth made 10 saves. Musser led the team with six shots, five on goal.
Geneva returns most of its team next year. The only graduating senior that was a regular this season is Katherine Estep. The Golden Tornadoes also should get multiple players back who were lost this season due to injury.
