Men’s Soccer Suffers Narrow Loss at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team battled first-place Grove City all game while on the road on Saturday night, but a first-half goal by the Wolverines saw Grove City prevail 1-0 in an evenly fought game.  Geneva dropped 5-4-4 overall, 2-2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City improved 7-5, 5-0 in the PAC.  The Wolverines have yet to concede a goal in conference play this season.

Both teams had chances in the 23rd minute.  Senior goalkeeper Gabriel Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) made a great save to keep Grove City off the board, and then 40 seconds later, junior Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlynton) collected a loose ball in the box, but his shot from close range was blocked just wide.

Grove City got on the board 10 minutes later when Jed Hart chipped a ball over Kemp's head and off the inside of the far post and into the net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Neither team could generate much offensively in the second half, as both defenses really locked down.  One of Geneva's best chance came midway through the second half when sophomore Caleb Chambers (Aston, Pa./Christian Academy) made a run down the left side of the box, but his shot went just wide of the far post.  Geneva pressed hard over the final ten minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.

Grove City held slim advantages of 8-6 in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal.  Each team had three corner kicks.  Kemp made five saves in the match.

Geneva will try to get back into the win column on Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes host Westminster at 7:00 p.m.
