BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team fell to Redeemer University, from Canada, on Saturday night in the opening round of the National Christian College Athletic Association Midwest Regional, 2-1. The loss ends the season for the Golden Tornadoes with an overall record of 10-4-7. Redeemer improves to 7-5-2 and will face the top seed in the region, Roberts Wesleyan, next week.
The game started well enough for Geneva, who got on the board first in the 18th minute when sophomore Darren Main sent a beautiful cross through the box that senior Cole Sauer blasted into the back of the net with his head on a full sprint run from eight yards away.
The lead didn't last long, though, as Redeemer answered on a counterattack five minutes later when Gerrit Oldejans received a pass in the box, cut back, and put one inside the near post from 15 yards away. That's where the score stayed heading into the half.
Redeemer caught a break six minutes into the second half. Derek Proulx sent a low corner kick along the end line that the Geneva defense miscommunicated on, and the ball ended up bouncing into the net off the leg of senior goalkeeper Gabriel Kemp, without a Royal within three yards of the ball.
Geneva began to ramp up the pressure looking for the equalizer, with most of the final 40 minutes played in Redeemer's half of the field, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't break through the Royals' well-organized defense, and Geneva fell 2-1.
The final stats showed a fairly even game, with Redeemer holding slight advantages of 9-8 in shots and 5-4 in shots on goal.
The loss wraps up the season for Geneva, which put together a strong year despite two heartbreaking losses to close out the season.
