Trevor Tipton Scores Career-High in Big Win at Thiel to Open PAC Play

GREENVILLE, Pa. – After reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year Lyle Tipton stole the show in the Geneva's season-opening victory over Hiram last week, his younger brother Trevor Tipton led the way at Thiel on Thursday night, scoring a career-high 29 points to lead the men to an impressive 90-65 victory over the Tomcats.  Geneva improved to 2-0, 1-0 in the PAC, while Thiel dropped to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the PAC.

Geneva actually started slowly, looking like a team who hadn't played in over a week.  Lyle Tipton scored the opening basket of the game, but it was the only made field goal for the Golden Tornadoes for almost six minutes, with Thiel taking an early 7-3 lead.  Trevor Tipton got Geneva going, though, with a three-pointer to start a nine-point run, and the Golden Tornadoes would never trail again.

The Tomcats pulled even briefly, 12-12, before back-to-back three-pointers from Lyle and Trevor Tipton would give Geneva a lead it would not relinquish.  The Golden Tornadoes then closed the half with a flurry.

After Thiel closed to within 20-16 with seven minutes remaining before the break, a three-point play from junior Ryan Rachic began a 24-8 run to close out the half.  The Golden Tornadoes did about whatever they wanted offensively, as the Tomcats had no answer for Geneva's inside and outside game.  The Golden Tornadoes took a 44-24 lead into the break, with Trevor Tipton scoring 15 points in the half.

Trevor Tipton opened the second half with three straight free throws after he was fouled shooting a three-pointer on the opening possession.  The Tomcats never got closer than 19 points the rest of the game.  Tipton continued to stay hot from outside, while brother Lyle and the rest of the Geneva starting lineup took care of the rest.  The Golden Tornadoes took their biggest lead of the game, 90-58, on a three-pointer from freshman Jonathan Bertovich, before closing out the 90-65 victory.

Trevor Tipton shot 10-of-12 from the floor, including 6-of-6 from three-point range, as a part of those career-high 29 points.  Lyle Tipton added 21 points, along with 11 rebounds, while Rachic and senior Isaac Massie each contributed 10 points.  Geneva shot 47% from the floor, including an impressive 12-of-22 (55%) from three-point range.  The defense held Thiel to just 31% shooting from the floor.

"Any time you can pick up a road win in the conference, that's a good thing," said Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero.  "Obviously Trevor was really good tonight, probably the best game of his career.  We started a little slowly, but we really defended well, and that eventually got our offense going.  We were able to get some valuable minutes for our freshmen in the second half, and now we have to get ready quickly for Grove City on a quick turnaround.

Geneva will stay on the road when the men travel to Grove City this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff with the Wolverines.
