WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College men's basketball team picked up a road win at Waynesburg on Saturday, 71-55, to close the semester with its fifth straight victory. The Golden Tornadoes are now 8-1 overall, 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-5, 1-5 in the PAC.
Waynesburg held its only lead of the game early, and that just briefly. Geneva quickly turned around its 8-6 deficit, though. A steal and layup from senior
Lyle Tipton, and two free throws from junior
Ryan Rachic, gave the Golden Tornadoes a lead they would ultimately never relinquish.
In fact, Geneva closed the half with a huge run to take control of the game. After Waynesburg pulled within 10-9, the Golden Tornadoes scored the next seven points, the last bucket coming on a three-pointer from sophomore
Trevor Tipton. The lead continued to grow over the final ten minutes of the first half, and by the time the break hit, Geneva led 38-16, closing the half on a 32-8 run.
Lyle Tipton had 12 points, while
Trevor Tipton added 10 points.
The Golden Tornadoes continued their dominant play early in the second half. Geneva scored 12 of the first 16 points in the second half, the last bucket a three-pointer from
Lyle Tipton, to take a 50-20 lead.
Waynesburg did manage close the gap, pulling within 15 points with seven minutes to go and 11 points with three minutes remaining, but the outcome was never in doubt as the Golden Tornadoes closed out the win, 71-55.
Lyle Tipton again led the offense, scoring 31 points.
Trevor Tipton added 14 points and Massie 12 points for the men. Rachic finished with eight points and ten rebounds. The Golden Tornadoes were dominant on the boards, outrebounding Waynesburg 49-33, which made up for just a 6-of-24 (25%) performance from long range.
"This was a really good road win to head into a little bit of a break," said Head Coach
Jeff Santarsiero. "The first half was about as good as we've played defensively all year. These guys were really locked in the last couple of days, and we executed our scouting report really well. We got a little sloppy in the second half, but we made plays down the stretch to never let it get too close. We'll get a little break now before getting ready for the road trip to Texas where we'll face two really talented teams."
Geneva will have a ten-day break before traveling to Texas for two games before Christmas. The Golden Tornadoes will play games against Southwestern and Trinity on December 20 and December 21.
