SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Geneva College men's basketball team dropped the final game of its road trip to Texas on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the hosts Trinity, 78-63, in the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic. Geneva is now 8-3, while Trinity stands at 6-4.
Just as the Golden Tornadoes did the day before, the men fell into a big early hole, with cold shooting and turnovers a problem. Trinity jumped out to an early 15-5 lead. Geneva managed to pull within 20-16 on a three-pointer from sophomore
Trevor Tipton midway through the half, but the Tigers answered with ten straight points. Trinity's size and athleticism in the paint proved too much for Geneva to manage, and the Tigers took a 48-28 lead into the break. Senior
Lyle Tipton led the team with ten points and seven rebounds.
Trinity scored the first seven points of the second half, and Head Coach
Jeff Santarsiero decided to use most of the second half to get playing time for a number of freshmen and reserves.
Trevor Tipton led the team with 13 points, while
Lyle Tipton barely played in the second half and finished with ten points. Geneva shot just 32% from the floor, including 6-of-24 (25%) from three-point range.
"We just didn't shoot it well this week," said Santarsiero. "Trinity is really good, and you won't beat good teams shooting it poorly. This was a good test for us, though, and will hopefully help up in conference play. We really need the rest right now, with multiple guys battling injuries, so the break is coming at a good time for us. This obviously wasn't the way we hoped the week would go, but we got a chance to get a number of guys some extended minutes, so that's a positive."
The men will now get almost two weeks off before returning to action the first week of January for some key conference games. Geneva hosts Westminster on Tuesday, January 3, and then heads to W&J on Thursday, January 5.
