Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Earns Tough Victory at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team earned its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory on Friday afternoon at Waynesburg, coming from behind to pull out a 6-3 win over the Yellow Jackets.  Geneva improved to 5-7 overall, 2-4 in the PAC.

Graduate student Nate Heidengren (Aliquippa, Pa./Beaver County Christian) and junior Jacques Guillembet (Ft. Myers, Fla./South Ft. Myers) earned a win in #1 doubles 8-5, but Geneva dropped tough matches in #2 and #3 doubles by identical 8-6 scores to put the Golden Tornadoes in an early hole.

However, Geneva turned things around in singles action.  Heidengren won his match in #1 singles 6-1, 6-4, while Guillembet won a tough match in #2 singles 7-6, 7-5.  Senior Josiah Shaver (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) came from behind in his match in the third set to prevail 6-3, 2-6, 10-7.  Senior Amos Luptak (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) won easily in #4 singles 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Jacob Zangas (Fenelton, Pa./Butler) won his match in #6 singles, which was the match that clinched the victory, 6-1, 6-2.

"We've been waiting for this match for months, after losing to Waynesburg in the fall," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "Even after a disappointing start in doubles, we were able to stick with it and fight out a win.  I'm especially proud of Jake for closing out that fifth point."

Geneva wraps up its regular season with a home match tomorrow against W&J.  The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. at Blackhawk Courts.  The PAC playoffs start next week, with Geneva likely playing a quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
