STEUEBENVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva College baseball team saw Franciscan come from behind late to take the opening game of the three-game series on Friday afternoon, 6-4. Geneva's record is now 9-26, 5-17 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
The game could not have started any better for the Golden Tornadoes. Two of the first three batters reached base, and then freshman Zack Sackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) sent a pitch over the left field fence to give Geneva a quick 3-0 lead.
Franciscan got on the board in the bottom of the third off junior starter Jarrett Orbin (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield), scoring twice to pull within one run. However, senior Dillon Bickerton (Salem, Ohio/Salem) homered in the top of the fourth to push the Geneva lead back to 4-2.
The Barons took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times with two outs to go ahead 5-4. The Golden Tornado offense couldn't get back on track the last three innings. Franciscan added an insurance run in the seventh and held on for the 6-4 win.
Geneva managed just five hits in the game, with Sackett leading offense with a 2-for-4 effort with the home run and three RBIs.
These two teams will finish the three-game series tomorrow when Geneva plays host to a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
