Volleyball Falls in Four at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match at Grove City on Tuesday night by a score of 13-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-27.  The loss dropped the Golden Tornadoes to 5-8 overall, while Grove City won its seventh straight match to improve to 7-5.

The first set was close early, with sophomore Megan Veon (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) picking up a kill to pull Geneva within 11-10.  However, Grove City went on a 11-1 run to pull away for a 25-13 win.

Grove City won the first four points of the second set.  Geneva pulled within 8-6, but again the Wolverines steadily pulled away for another win, 25-15.

The third set proved to be a much tighter set.  Grove City took it biggest lead at 11-8, but a 5-1 Golden Tornado run, the last point coming on an ace from junior Samantha Peachey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), gave Geneva a 13-12 lead.  The Golden Tornadoes would stretch their lead to 16-13 before the Wolverines reeled off seven straight points to take a 20-16 advantage.  Geneva would rebound, though, using a three-point run a few minutes later to take a 24-22 lead, and Veon finished the set off with a kill, 25-23.

Grove City jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set before Geneva scored seven straight points, with two Peachey aces in the run.  The Golden Tornadoes would push their lead to as much as 17-10, and Geneva still led 23-18 late before Grove City rallied.  The Wolverines scored four straight to pull within one.  A kill from Peachey gave Geneva set point, but Grove City closed the set on a 4-1 run to finish out the match, 27-25.

Veon led the offense again with 13 kills, while freshman Emily Nelson (Kijabe, Kenya/Rift Valley Academy) added eight kills and 10 digs.  The Golden Tornadoes struggled in their attack, though, hitting just .012 as a team.  Grove City hit .138.  Freshman Heather Seubert (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) had a team-high 21 digs, while freshman Ashley Monroe (Warren, Ohio/Labrae Local) had a team-high 19 assists.  Veon added six blocks.

This match did not count in the conference standings, as Geneva plays four early matches against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) teams that will not count in the standings.  Geneva's first PAC match will be on Saturday, October 1, against this same Grove City team.  The women will be in action again on Thursday when the Golden Tornadoes host Westminster at 7:00 p.m.
