BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped a tight first set to Allegheny on Saturday afternoon, and the Golden Tornadoes never recovered in falling in straight sets 22-25, 15-25, 11-25. Geneva dropped to 6-9, while Allegheny improved to 8-8.
The first set is where things turned in the match. Two kills from sophomore Megan Veon (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk), a kill from junior Tess Neville (Lisbon, Ohio/Crestview) and an ace from freshman Ashley Monroe (Warren, Ohio/Labrae Local) gave Geneva an early 4-1 lead. Allegheny used a four-point run midway through the set to take a brief 12-10 lead, but the Golden Tornadoes regained the lead and extended the margin to 22-19 on a kill from Neville. However, the Gators scored the last six points of the set to win 25-22, and Geneva never seemed to recover from the late blown lead.
Geneva did jump ahead 7-4 in the second set before Allegheny answered with a 12-2 run. The Gators made very few errors, while the Golden Tornadoes struggled in their attack. Geneva pulled within three points at one point before Allegheny pulled away for a 25-15 win.
The third set was never really close. Allegheny led 7-5 when the Gators took full control. A few minutes later Allegheny led 15-7, and the Gators never let up in winning 25-11.
The final stats showed a significant difference between the two school's attacks. Allegheny hit .437 as a team, including .619 in the final set, making just seven hitting errors. Geneva hit just .060, including 23 hitting errors. Neville and freshman Emily Nelson (Kijabe, Kenya/Rift Valley Academy) led the team with seven kills. Monroe led the team with 19 assists and seven digs.
Geneva heads to Thiel on Tuesday for its final non-conference tune-up before beginning Presidents' Athletic Conference play next Saturday. The match with the Tomcats begins at 7:00 p.m.
