Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bethany Converts Chances to Defeat Women’s Soccer

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Bethany College Bison did a better job of converting chances on Wednesday night inside Reeves Stadium against the Geneva College women's soccer team, and the Bison left town with a 4-1 victory over the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva dropped to 3-5-2, 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany improved to 7-1-2, 1-1 in the PAC.

Bethany took advantage of a Geneva defensive mistake to get on the board just nine minutes into the game.  The Golden Tornadoes had a couple of chances to clear the ball out of danger, but they were unable to do so and the ball eventually found the foot of Bethany's Monica Bird, and she put in into the net to place Geneva in an early hole.

Geneva turned up the pressure over the next 20 minutes, and sophomore Saige Musser (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) broke through with a beautiful run down the left side, cutting back to the middle and beating the keeper to the far post.

The momentum didn't last long, though.  Less than one minute later, Bethany converted a cross through the middle of the box to regain the lead, and four minutes later the Bison scored again on a free kick from just outside of the box which sophomore keeper Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) got her hands on but couldn't prevent from going into the net.  That sent Geneva into the halftime break staring at a two-goal deficit despite being even in shots at 6-6.

Musser continued to be dangerous down the left side in the second half, as Bethany had no one that could stay with her speed, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't find a second goal that would pull them within striking distance.  Bird put the game away in the closing minutes with one more goal as Geneva had pushed forward defensively trying to find some late offense, and that goal closed out the scoring, 4-1.

The final stats showed a more even game than the final score might indicate.  Bethany finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.  But the Bison did a better job of converting their chances in picking up their first PAC victory in over a year.

Geneva will try to rebound on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes host Saint Vincent at 4:30 p.m. on Reeves Field.  The women will recognize three seniors prior to the game in Paige Bartley (Darlington, Pa./Homeschool), Katherine Estep (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) and Kayla Hubbs (Sebring, Ohio/Saint Thomas Aquinas).
