SANDUSKY, Ohio – A day after winning two exciting five-set matches at the Great Lakes Crossover on Friday, the Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped two matches to Hiram and Manchester on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes are now 2-2.
Geneva struggled in its first match of the day against Hiram Saturday morning, not surprising considering the women didn't finish up their five-set thrilling win the night before against Defiance until almost midnight. Hiram controlled most of the match, winning 25-18, 25-11, 25-20.
Sophomore Megan Veon (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) led the offense with eight kills, while senior Maggie Townsend (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) added 18 digs.
In the second match of the day, Geneva got off to a much better start against Manchester, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-18.
However, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't find that third set they needed for victory. Manchester won the third set 25-18, and then Spartans found the points they needed late in sets four and five to win 25-23 and 15-13, picking up the comeback victory.
Veon led the offense again with 14 kills, while Townsend had a career-high 40 digs.
Geneva heads next to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
(Some stats from this weekend are still be tabulated and will be uploaded to the Geneva website when complete.)
