Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer’s Game at SUNY-Delhi Ends in a Tie

DELHI, N.Y. – It's been a common theme so far this season for the Geneva College women's soccer team.  The Golden Tornadoes controlled most of their game with SUNY-Delhi on Thursday night in its first road match of the season, but the women couldn't convert enough of their chances and had to settle for a 1-1 tie.  Geneva's record is now 1-1-2.

The women got off to a great start when sophomore Emma Daku-Treas (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland) secured a loose ball in the box and easily beat the keeper into the far upper corner in the 8th minute, giving Geneva the early lead.

Delhi pulled level in the 24th minute when Kelsey Innes received a cross on a run inside the box, and she cut around sophomore goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) and slotted the ball into the empty net to even the game at 1-1.  That's where things stayed heading into the halftime break, with Geneva holding a 12-5 advantage in shots.

The second half was played largely in Delhi's half of the field, with Geneva controlling most of the half.  The Golden Tornadoes looked to have pulled ahead in the 74th minute when Daku-Treas' shot was deflected right to sophomore Jenna Hartman (Beaver Falls, Pa./Homeschool) at the goalline.  Hartman attempted to chest the bouncing ball into the net from a foot away, and the ball appeared to cross the line before the Delhi keeper reached back and pulled the ball back out, but the refs allowed play to continue.  A moment later, Hartman was just inches away from heading in a cross at the back post, but the ball just went over her head.

Neither team could find a winner late, and the two teams walked off the field with a 1-1 draw.

The stats reflect the control the Golden Tornadoes had on the match.  Geneva finished with a 25-9 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal.  In all four games this season, the women have held a significant advantage on shots and shots on goal over their opponent.  Senior Lydia Beare (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) led the way with seven shots, including four on goal.

The women will get a day off before taking on St. John Fisher on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
