GREENVILLE, Pa. – Junior Kami Mummau came through when the Geneva College women's volleyball needed her on Tuesday at Thiel, finishing with a career high 17 kills in helping the Golden Tornadoes prevail in four sets 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14. Geneva improved to 9-7 overall, 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
The opening set was tight early before Geneva reeled off five straight points to grab an 11-7 lead. Mummau had three kills in that stretch. After a Tomcat point, the Golden Tornadoes scored four straight behind kills from Mummau, senior Samantha Peachey and junior Megan Veon. Thiel battled back, though, pulling within 18-17 before a kill from sophomore Emily Nelson started a 5-1 run to give the women a 23-18 edge. The Tomcats tried to battle back, but Mummau finished off the set with a kill, 25-22.
Thiel scored six straight points early in the second set to quickly jump ahead, 8-2. Geneva slowly worked itself back into the set, using four straight points behind kills from Mummau, Peachey and freshman Julia Jordon, to pull within 13-12. However, that was as close as the Golden Tornadoes would get. The Tomcats answered with a 7-1 run to take control of the set, eventually pulling even in the match with a 25-19 win.
The third set stayed close early before kills from Jordon and senior Tess Neville started a 7-1 run to give Geneva a 15-8 lead. Jordon and Peachey added kills later in the stretch. The Tomcats wouldn't go away, though, scoring four straight points later in the set to pull within 19-18. Another kill from Jordon helped Geneva push the lead back up to 23-20, but the Tomcats answered with three straight points to pull even at 23-23, the first time the set had been tied since 6-6. However, a kill from Mummau and an ace from junior Zoe Pifer gave Geneva the set, 25-23.
The Golden Tornadoes got back-to-back aces from Nelson in an early four-point run that gave the women an 11-6 lead in the fourth set. Thiel would again fight back, pulling within 13-12, but it was all Geneva to finish the match out. The Golden Tornadoes responded with a 12-2 run to finish off the match, 25-14. Veon had four kills over the closing run, including the final point, while Mummau added two kills.
Mummau continued her strong play in recent matches, finishing with 17 kills, 15 digs and three aces. Jordon gave the women a spark off the bench with seven kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Peachey led the offense with 31 assists, while Pifer had a team-high 32 digs. Nelson chipped in with 18 digs and a team-best four aces. Freshman Katie Seboe led the team with five blocks.
Geneva will be back in action on Thursday when the women host a Chatham squad that swept Allegheny on Tuesday night. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. inside Metheny Fieldhouse.
