Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Battles W&J to a Scoreless Draw

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Neither team could find the back of the net when the Geneva College women's soccer team hosted Washington and Jefferson on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon on Geneva's Senior Day, with the teams settling for a 0-0 draw despite several scoring chances for each team.  The women honored senior Lydia Beare prior to the kickoff.  Geneva's record now stands at 4-7-2 overall, 3-3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J is now 8-2-4, 3-1-3 in the PAC.

The match set up as a key one for both teams who were looking to put themselves in position for a PAC playoff spot.  Geneva came out with the better control early on, and that almost culminated in a goal in the 22nd minute when freshman Abby Stover sent a curling shot that was headed into the far corner before W&J's keeper, Abby Hipkins, made a diving fingertip save to push Stover's shot onto the post.

The Presidents had the better play over the final 20 minutes of the half, with junior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth coming up with a key save late in the half to keep the game scoreless at the break.  The two teams each had six shots at the half.

Geneva regained the better of the play early in the second half.  Junior Saige Musser almost got Geneva on the board midway through the second half, but her shot from inside the box went just wide of the far post.

W&J had a great chance in the closing seconds.  The Presidents sent a cross in behind Geneva defense, which Audrey Chapman took a sliding shot at, but Farnsworth made a huge save with two seconds left to avoid a devastating end for Geneva.

The final stats reflected how evenly the game played out.  Geneva held a slim 13-12 edge in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.  The women also finished with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.  Farnsworth made four saves to earn the shutout.

The draw sets up a huge game for the women at Franciscan on Wednesday.  The winner of the game will be in great position to secure a spot in the PAC playoffs.
