Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball’s Season Ends at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College volleyball team entered its regular season finale at Grove City facing a must-win match if the Golden Tornadoes were going to advance into the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs.  Grove City also entered the match in the same situation, needing a win to make the playoffs, and in a regular season match that was in essence a playoff game, the Wolverines prevailed in four set 25-17, 25-23, 12-25, 25-21 to qualify for the final PAC playoff spot.  Geneva's season ends at 11-12 overall, 4-6 in the PAC.

Grove City opened the match with four straight points before Geneva responded with four straight points, the last two on kills by junior Megan Veon.  However, the Wolverines answered with an 11-3 run to take a 15-7 lead, and Geneva never recovered in dropping the first set, 25-17.

The Golden Tornadoes opened the second set by grabbing an early 6-1 lead, with senior Tess Neville and junior Kami Mummau each contributing a kill.  Geneva maintained that lead midway through the set before Grove City scored five straight points to pull even, 15-15.  The Wolverines didn't take their first lead until a three-point run gave Grove City a 22-20 edge.  Geneva responded with three straight points behind kills from senior Samantha Peachey and Mummau, giving the Golden Tornadoes the lead back, but the Wolverines scored the final three points to win, 25-23.

Grove City jumped ahead 5-2 in the third set before Geneva took over.  The Golden Tornadoes scored the next six points, three on kills from Neville, and a few minutes later, eight straight Geneva points gave the Golden Tornadoes a 23-8 advantage.  A kill from Mummau eventually finished off the set, 25-12.

The fourth set was fairly tight most of the way.  A kill from Veon evened the set at 16-16 before Grove City scored the next three points, and the women could never catch back up.  The Golden Tornadoes pulled within two points late, 23-21, on a kill from Mummau, but Grove City scored the final two points to win 25-21.

Mummau led the team with 15 kills in the season finale.  Veon added 12 kills, while Neville wrapped up her career with 10 kills.  Peachey led the offense with 36 assists, while adding 12 digs, in the final match of her career.  Junior Zoe Pifer led the team with 15 digs.  Geneva hit just .119 as a team.

Geneva will have five seniors to replace next year, including a couple starters, but its top two players in kills, Mummau and Veon, will be back as the Golden Tornadoes try to return to the postseason next year.
