BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end against a talented W&J squad that is tied for first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), 94-58, on Saturday afternoon inside Metheny Fieldhouse. Geneva dropped to 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the PAC, while W&J improved to 8-1, 6-1 in the PAC.
Both teams came out hot to start the game. The Presidents found success breaking through the Geneva defensive pressure for easy layups at the bucket, while the Golden Tornadoes also found success in the paint, answering W&J's baskets with scores of their own. Senior Emily Bucheit hit a three-pointer less than three minutes into the game to give Geneva a 9-8 edge.
A layup from senior Cynthia Milroy midway through the first quarter tied the score at 15-15 before Geneva went cold from the field. The Presidents went on 12-2 run over the next four minutes before a three-pointer form junior Taylor Milroy pulled Geneva within 29-20 at the first break.
The lead stayed right around that range for the first five minutes of the second quarter before W&J took over. The Presidents scored the final 15 points of the first half, behind three three-pointers from Hannah Archer, to take a 50-26 lead into the break.
Geneva never made up any ground in the second half, as W&J found success offensively at the hoop, and from deep, in finishing off the 94-58 win.
San Nicolas led the women with 21 points, while Taylor and Cynthia Milroy each reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Geneva hit just 21-of-70 (30%) from the floor and 5-of-26 (19.2%) from deep.
Archer led four Presidents in double figures with 17 points as W&J hit an impressive 41-of-80 (51.3%) from the floor, including 8-of-24 (33.3%) from three-point range. The bigger Presidents also finished with a 59-31 rebounding advantage.
Geneva heads to Trine University in Indiana next week to play in the Croxton & Roe Insurance Holiday Classic. The Golden Tornadoes will face #17 Trine on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., followed by a contest against Calvin on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. After the classic wraps up, the women will enjoy a few days off over the holidays.
