ANGOLA, Ind. – A short-handed Geneva College women's basketball team fell at #17 Trine, 93-59, on the opening day of the Croxton & Roe Insurance Holiday Classic. The Golden Tornadoes were playing without their leading scorer, senior
Mia San Nicolas, who is the top offensive player in the conference. Geneva dropped to 6-6 overall, while Trine improved to 7-2.
An early bucket from sophomore
Anna Ulmer, followed by a three-pointer by senior
Emily Bucheit, gave Geneva its only lead of the game, 5-4. The duo would lead the offense for much of the night. Trine followed with a 15-2 run to take a double-digit lead before Bucheit knocked down another three-pointer.
Trine took a 24-12 lead into the second quarter, but the Golden Tornadoes hung with the Thunder over the next two quarters. Geneva opened the period with buckets from Ulmer and senior
Cynthia Milroy to cut the deficit below double digits, and another three-pointer from Bucheit got Geneva with 26-19 midway through the quarter. Trine answered with a run to build a 41-24 lead a minute before halftime before three-pointers from Bucheit and junior
Taylor Milroy brought the Golden Tornadoes within 41-30 at the break.
Milroy drained another three-pointer to open the second half to cut the Trine lead under double digits once more, but Geneva could not get any closer. The Thunder extended the lead to 60-46 at the end of the third quarter.
The short-handed Geneva squad appeared to run out of gas in the fourth quarter trying to stay with the nationally ranked Thunder. Trine outscored Geneva 33-13 over the final ten minutes to win, 93-59.
Bucheit continued her strong recent play, finishing with 18 points, on 6-of-13 shooting from deep, just two points away from her career high. Ulmer added a career-high 14 points, while
Taylor Milroy knocked down three long-range shots to finish with 13 points. Geneva shot 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor, 10-of-28 (35.7%) from three-point range.
Trine finished 36-of-81 (44.4%), including 12-of-33 (36.4%) from deep. Erin Sherwood led five Thunder players with 16 points.
The women will have a quick turnaround for their final game of the classic, slated for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow when Geneva takes on Calvin College. After the game, the women will head home and enjoy a long stretch off over the holidays.
