Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

W&J Pulls Away from Women in Second Half

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team hung with #24 ranked W&J on the road on Wednesday night before seeing the Presidents pull away in the second half for an 87-64 victory.  W&J improved to an impressive 22-2 overall record, 18-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva dropped to 6-18 overall, 6-13 in the PAC.

Sophomore Abby Shoaff opened the game with a three-pointer, followed by a free throw from junior Cynthia Stewart, to give Geneva an early 4-0 lead.  W&J responded with five straight points before junior Mia San Nicolas answered with a three-pointer for her own.  The Presidents followed with a 20-7 run over the final five minutes of the first quarter, though, to take a 25-14 edge at the first break.

W&J would push its lead as high as 32-20 before San Nicolas answered with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit in a half, and a layup from freshman Hailey Carroll just before the break pulled Geneva within 41-36 at the intermission.  San Nicolas had 18 points in the first half.

The Presidents opened the second half with six straight points, and W&J never really looked back.  Geneva's offense went cold in the third quarter, while the Presidents made shots.  By the time W&J slowed down, it had opened the second half on a 20-2 run to take a 61-38.  The Golden Tornadoes never pulled closer than 20 points the remainder of the game in falling 87-64.

San Nicolas had another huge game, scoring 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting, while grabbing eight rebounds.  No other Golden Tornado managed more than six points.  Geneva shot 35% from the floor and 6-of-31 (19%) from three-point range.  W&J shot 45% from the floor and had four Presidents in double figures.

The women wrap up the regular season by celebrating Senior Day on Saturday against Saint Vincent.  Senior Isabella Roth will be recognized for her contributions to the program.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
