BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team stayed undefeated in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play on Wednesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse, sweeping visiting Hiram 25-21, 25-22, 25-19. The victory improved Geneva's record to 7-11 overall, 4-0 in the AMCC, while Hiram dropped to 4-7, 3-2 in the AMCC.
Hiram scored the opening point of the first set before Geneva answered with four straight points, with senior Jake Williams contributing a block and an ace and junior Emerson Spear a kill. The Terriers battled back, though, eventually retaking the lead, 12-11, midway through the set. However, a moment later the Golden Tornadoes used a 6-2 run, with Williams adding two more kills, to regain the lead, 19-15. Hiram managed to pull within two twice, the last time at 22-20, but a kill from senior Byron Spear and a block and a kill from junior Carter Milroy gave Geneva the set, 25-21.
Byron Spear opened the second set with two kills, followed by a kill from Emerson Spear, to give Geneva a quick 3-0 edge. The Terriers again battled back, though, taking their first lead of the set, 9-8. The Golden Tornadoes had a response, though, using a 6-1 run to grab a 15-11 advantage. The Spear brothers each had kills in the run. Geneva held an edge the rest of the way, though Hiram did pull within 24-22 late. A Terrier attack error gave the Golden Tornadoes the set, though, 25-22.
Geneva opened the third set with an ace from sophomore Decker Milroy, kills from the Spear brothers, and a block from freshman Evan Puhl and Emerson Spear, sandwiched around a Hiram point. A few minutes later, a kill from Byron Spear extended the Geneva lead to 13-7. The Terriers managed to pull within 16-15, but kills from Spear, Williams and Milroy built the Golden Tornado edge back up, and Geneva finished off the match, 25-19.
Byron Spear led the team with 15 kills on a .382 hitting percentage, while Williams and Emerson Spear each added seven kills. As a team Geneva hit .237. Decker Milroy led the team with 15 assists, while Williams had a team-best 11 digs. Carter Milroy and Puhl each finished with three blocks.
Geneva heads to New York this weekend where the Golden Tornadoes will play three matches. Geneva plays an exhibition match with Finger Lakes Community College on Friday evening before playing Wells and SUNY Potsdam in a tri-match on Saturday.
