BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team swept an improved Saint Vincent squad 25-20, 27-25, 25-13 on Wednesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse to stay undefeated and in first place in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play. With the win, the Golden Tornadoes improved to 10-11 overall, 6-0 in the AMCC, while Saint Vincent dropped 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the AMCC.
The teams alternated points early in the first set before freshman Andrew Ubinger served Geneva to seven straight points to take an 11-4 lead. Senior Byron Spear had three kills in the run, junior Carter Milroy two kills, while Ubinger added an ace. The Bearcats hung in the set, pulling within three points multiple times late, but a kill from Ubinger finished off the opening set, 25-20.
Geneva opened the second set with three straight behind a kill from Spear and two aces from senior Jake Williams. Saint Vincent answered with three straight to pull even before the Golden Tornadoes pushed the lead out to 8-4. The Bearcats responded with five straight points, though, to take their first lead of the set, and the set was tight the rest of the way. Saint Vincent managed to push its edge to 20-18 late, but Geneva responded with a 5-2 run to take a 23-22 advantage after a kill from Ubinger and an ace from Williams. The teams alternated the next five points before kills from Milroy and Williams gave Geneva the set, 27-25, despite Saint Vincent hitting .407 in the set.
Williams was the star of the show in the third set. Two kills and an ace from Williams gave Geneva an early 4-1 edge. Then, with Geneva leading 11-7, Williams served the Golden Tornadoes to eight straight points, including two more aces. Byron and junior Emerson Spear each had a block and a kill in the run. Geneva easily closed out the set, 25-13, following another kill from Williams.
Byron Spear again the led the team with 15 kills on a .281 hitting percentage. Emerson Spear added 10 kills on a .600 hitting percentage, while Williams finished with seven kills, 11 digs and six aces in a strong all-around performance. As a team Geneva hit .312. Graduate student Curtis Thomas had a team-high 19 assists, while sophomore Joshua Sangrey had a team-best 16 digs.
Geneva heads out onto the road on Saturday for its last matches before Spring Break. The Golden Tornadoes play a tri-match at Penn State Altoona against Mount Aloysius and Altoona. The first match is at 1:00 p.m.
