Baseball Drops Two to Hilbert

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Geneva College baseball team had a tough day on Friday, dropping a doubleheader to Hilbert by scores of 3-2 and 11-4.  The losses evened Geneva's record at 5-5 on the season.

In the first game of the day, Geneva got on the board in the top of the first inning when sophomore Connor O'Brien scored on a Hilbert error.  The Hawks answered back with a run in the bottom of the first off freshman starter Collin Porter.

Geneva retook the lead in the top of the third on an RBI-single from sophomore Zack Sackett, but Hilbert took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth by scoring twice.

Neither offense could get anything else going the rest of the game, and Hilbert held on for the 3-2 win.

Porter took the loss, giving up six hits and three runs in five innings.  The offense managed just four hits, with junior David Toruno collecting two of them.

The second started poorly for Geneva, mainly due to its defensive struggles.  Hilbert scored once in the top of the first off freshman starter Ryan Conover, and then disaster struck in the second inning.  Four Geneva errors led to six Hilbert runs, all unearned, to give the Hawks a commanding 7-0 edge.

The Golden Tornadoes managed to respond in the bottom of the second with three runs, highlighted by an RBI-double from sophomore Cael Brandt.

Geneva's offense couldn't keep things going, though, and Hilbert added to their lead with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to finish out the 11-4 win.

Conover took the loss, though just one of the seven runs he gave up in his three innings were earned.  The offense managed seven hits in the second game.

The baseball team will wrap up its stay in South Carolina tomorrow with a doubleheader against Wells beginning at 9:00 a.m.
