Game Recap: Softball |

Tough Friday in Florida for Softball

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team had a tough day on Friday during its trip in Florida, dropping both of its games.  The Golden Tornadoes lost to Nebraska Wesleyan, 13-2 in five innings, and then fell to Concordia Chicago by a similar score, 13-3.  Geneva's record is now 2-6 on the season.

The first game against Nebraska Wesleyan got out of hand early.  Freshman starter Jorja Koerner retired the first two batters in the first inning before allowing the next five batters to reach, resulting in three runs.  Nebraska Wesleyan took control of the game with seven more runs in the second inning.

Geneva's offense scored its only two runs of the game in the third inning on RBIs from junior Julia Hart and senior Peri Ceasri, but the game was called after five innings with Nebraska Wesleyan leading 13-2.

The second game of the day against Concordia Chicago started better.  Freshman starter Sophia Tvaroch retired Concordia in the top of the first, and Geneva took advantage of some control issues from Concordia starter Emma Borelli to score twice on just one hit.  That hit was a 2-RBI single from junior Elishea Reed.

Concordia answered with two runs in the top of the second after a walk and an error started the inning.  Graduate student Sarah Johnson's RBI-double in the bottom of the frame gave Geneva the lead back, 3-2.

However, Concordia took its first lead of the game in the fourth, with two Geneva errors contributing to the problems.  The Cougars scored four times in the inning, taking a 6-3 advantage.  Concordia added to its lead with three runs in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh, and the Cougars closed out the win, 13-3.

The women will try to bounce back tomorrow with two more games, starting with a game against Elizabethtown at 9:00 a.m.  Geneva will then take on Hiram at 11:30 a.m.
